If my husband takes his pension now, will it affect his Social Security benefits?

Published: October 23, 2024

Full question: My husband got sick and was only given 1 years worth of disability pay. He hasn’t been able to go back to work for 4 years now. He got sick and his company closed for good during the pandemic. He have a pension plan. Is it wise to take the pension plan benefits now? And will it affect his social security benefits amount?

Hi there,

These are good questions to be asking.

The pension may or may not affect the amount of his Social Security benefits due to the WEP rule.

Without knowing his age and the amount of his Social Security retirement benefit, it is not possible to say when he should take the pension or start collecting his Social Security benefits.
