I am retired from military and police department. How will the GPO and WEP affect me if I collect a spousal benefit?

Full question: I am retired military and I retired from a Police Department that didn’t pay into Social Security. How would the GPO and WEP affect me if I was to collect a spousal benefit based on my wife’s earnings?

Hi there,

We are assuming that if the Police Department did not pay into Social Security that you are, or will be, collecting a pension from that job.

If this is the case, then the Government Pension Offset rules (GPO), would affect any spousal or survivor benefits you are entitled to. The rule states that two-thirds of the amount of your pension would be reduced from the spousal or survivor benefit amount.
