I recently became disabled at age 64. Am I eligible to claim disability benefits or SSI?

Hi there,
If you become disabled after filing early for retirement benefits, and are approved for Social Security Disability Insurance, SSDI, you can switch to SSDI benefits and possibly receive a higher amount than the reduced retirement benefits from filing early at age 62.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a means-tested cash benefit. In addition to having a disability, you must have low income and assets. The maximum monthly SSI payment for 2024 is $943 for an individual and $1,415 for a couple. For every $1 you get from Social Security, your SSI payment will be reduced by about $1. In addition, you may not have more than $2,000 in assets held in your name.
