When can we claim child-in-care benefits?

Published: January 27, 2026

Full question: We have a 27 year old son who is a brain cancer survivor since age four and on SSI since age 18. I’m 63 and not on Social Security until age 67, she is 56, can claim child in care benefits now?

Hi there,

Your spouse can claim child-in-care benefits before age 62 if you are receiving Social Security retirement or disability benefits and your son qualifies for a dependent benefit on your record. Your son receiving SSI does not count for triggering the spousal child-in-care benefit.

When you decide to start collecting benefits, reach out to SSA to ask them specifically about Disabled Adult Child (DAC) benefits and Child-in-Care spousal benefits to get clear guidance based on your exact earnings records and your son’s disability profile. You can reach your local SSA office here.

Warmly,
Martha
