I am still working. Should I apply for spousal benefits now or wait?

Published: January 11, 2024

Full question: If I am still working and my husband is retired collecting Social Security what is the advantage/disadvantage for me to apply/collect spousal benefits now?

Hi there,

If you are still working and are younger than your full retirement age, you will be subject to the earnings test threshold if you are collecting Social Security benefits.

When you do file for benefits you will be “deemed” to be filing for all the benefits you are eligible to receive, your own retirement benefits and a spousal benefit. You will only collect the higher of the two amounts.

For personalized assistance and/or support determining the optimal filing strategy for you, schedule a call with an RSSA here.

Take care,
Martha
