Will my own Social Security benefits be more than my current railroad survivor benefits?

Published: April 3, 2024

Full question: I am drawing the railroad widow benefits. I will be 70 next January. I worked many years and would collect a sizable Social Security check. How do I tell if it would be larger than the tier 1 check from my husband, or is that what I compare?

Hi there,

You can find an estimate of your age 70 Social Security retirement benefit amount in your my Social Security account on the SSA website or by contacting your local SSA office here. Set up a phone or in-person meeting to understand how the railroad survivor benefit and your retirement benefit affect each other.

Social Security decision making is complex and therefore it is important to take your unique circumstances into account. For personalized assistance, you can also schedule a call with an RSSA.

Take care,
Martha
