Will I automatically be enrolled in Medicare at age 65 if I am currently collecting survivor benefits?

Published: November 29, 2022

Full question: If someone is drawing Survivor benefits (since ago 60), will they automatically be enrolled in Medicare at 65 when they age in. Or are the only automatically enrolled if they are drawing their own/spousal benefits?

Hello,

Yes, if they are receiving benefits, the Social Security Administration will automatically sign them up at age 65 for parts A and B of Medicare.

Social Security handles the enrollment in Medicare, and they will send sign-up instructions at the beginning of the initial enrollment period, three months before the month of their 65th birthday.

However, depending on if you have other coverage, for example, from your current job, you may not need to begin part B. I would suggest that they reach out to a Medicare specialist to review all their options during the 3-month enrollment period.

All the best,
Martha
