Do I qualify to collect spousal benefits on my spouse’s US Social Security record?

Published: May 17, 2024

Full question: I am married to an US citizen. I am a permanent resident of the US. I collect a pension from my previous Canadian employer. I have never contributed to US Social Security, but I do qualify to receive Canada Pension Plan payments. My question is do I qualify to collect spousal benefits on my spouse’s US social security record?

Hi there!

This is a very good question.

Yes, you qualify for spousal benefits based on your spouse’s US Social Security earnings history.

Your spousal benefit amount will not be affected by the Government Pension Offset, because this rule does not apply to beneficiaries of foreign pensions.
