Do I qualify for ex-spousal survivor benefits?

Published: November 2, 2023

Full question: Hello, my son received survivors benefits until the age of 19. I also received survivor’s benefits due to be the ex-spouse caregiver of my son, but my portion stopped when my son turned 16. My son is now 21 and was just approved for DAC disability. Would I qualify to receive payment again due to my son being under 22?

Hello,

It appears that your son is receiving a survivor benefit based on your deceased ex-spouse’s earnings record. You qualify for ex-spousal survivor benefits. Survivor benefits can be collected as early as age 60 and if you are also eligible for your own retirement benefits, you are allowed to collect one benefit and later switch over to the other, depending on which will eventually be higher.
