Will I receive more SSDI if my temporary disability becomes a permanent disability?

Published: May 15, 2023

Full question: Would a person receiving SSDI now on temporary disability get more money monthly if she was diagnosed with a permanent disability?

Hi there,

Temporary or short term disability insurance, STD, is employer sponsored or purchased privately. It requires that the disability lasts from 1 to 13 weeks and that you are only unable to perform your current job.

STD insurance has no affect on qualifying for Social Security Disability Insurance, SSDI.

SSDI requires the disability to last a year or more and for you to show that you cannot perform any job, not just your most recent job. If you need more personalized assistance, please reach out to us at help@rssa.com to schedule a consultation.

Best of luck,
