When a Social Security recipient passes away, what will happen to their Social Security benefit payments?

Published: September 9, 2021

Hello,

When a fully insured worker, who may or may not have been collecting Social Security benefits, passes away, dependents of that worker may be entitled to certain amounts of the benefit.

Dependent survivors of a worker can include a spouse, ex-spouse, minor or adult-disabled children, and even parents in some cases.

The amount that would be paid to each person depends on many factors.

There are often specific claiming strategies that coordinate with the dependents’ other benefits to maximize the total lifetime amount.

A family member may also be entitled to a lump sum death payment.

The survivor benefit has many rules that surround it so it is important to speak with an expert to create a claiming strategy to receive all the benefits you are entitled to.

Take care,
Martha
