Will my earnings from being a paid caregiver count as earned income for Social Security purposes?

Published: October 15, 2024

Full question: Since I’ve been a caregiver for my disabled son and am just starting this year as a paid live-in caregiver through medicaid waiver. How will I be able to draw or show I’ve worked for SSI when it comes time for me to retire, since it’s tax exempt. Will it be as if I don’t work and will not be able to draw?

Hi there,

If your payments under the state waiver program are not being reported as income to you as an employee of the agency, or as an independent self-employed individual, then you will not be receiving earning credits for Social Security.

If you are a self-employed individual collecting the waiver payments and paying FICA taxes on them, you will acquire credits towards Social Security entitlement.

You can only receive Social Security retirement benefits if you have you have earned at least 40 credits, or 10 years of work, covered by FICA payroll tax contributions.
