How do I respond to this specific question on my application?

Published: January 27, 2026

Full question: Hi, I’m looking over my Application for SS Retirement Benefits. Question 13 (c) asks to enter information about any marriage if you meet the criteria. I would meet the criteria for having a disabled child and the disability began before age 22, however the child passed away in 2010. I’m confused about how to answer the question since the child is deceased. Are you knowledgeable about how parents of deceased disabled children should answer this question and/or any other question that pertains to a deceased disabled child?

Hi there,

I am so sorry for your loss. I would suggest that you leave the question blank. Near the end of the application there is a space to add any notes, and you can explain about your deceased child if you choose to do so. This will not have an impact on your retirement benefits.

Warmly,
Martha
