I am still working. Am I eligible for survivor benefits?

Published: January 11, 2024

Full question: My husband died in August 2023. Am I eligible for his retirement when I reach FRA? Also would I be eligible for survivor benefits at FRA? I am still working and my husband was receiving Social Security benefits.

Hi there,

The benefit received after a spouse has died is a survivor benefit. Survivor benefits are available for survivors as young as age 60.

If you are also entitled to your own retirement benefit, you can claim one benefit and later switch to the other if it becomes higher.

You will receive the highest survivor benefit if you collect that at your full retirement age (FRA). Your own retirement benefit though will increase due to delayed retirement credits up to age 70.
