Am I eligible for a survivors benefit?

Published: October 23, 2024

Full question: I was widowed 19 years ago. My wife was 57 at the time of her death. I began collecting Social Security payments at age 62. I am now 77 and have been told I may be eligible for a widows benefit as my wife had paid into the system for many years. Can I get an increased amount?

Hi there,

You may be entitled to a higher amount if the survivor benefit is greater than your own retirement benefit. Contact your local SSA office to provide them with your and your wife’s information so they can determine if you are eligible for a higher amount.

All the best,
Martha
