My SSI stopped due to my assets. How can I get it back?

Published: January 10, 2024

Full question: Hello, I just turned 58, divorced, and totally disabled. Before my divorce was final, I was receiving SSI. In the divorce, I won the 401k which put me over asset limit and the SSI stopped. The 401k is all I have for the rest of my life. Is there a way for me to get the SSI back? I read something about being able to get SSI if you take minimum distributions from a 401k, but it was for people over 59 1/2. I’m very scared for the future. Thanks for any advice.

Hi there,

I recommend that you contact SSA about the SSI income threshold.

You may also want to contact the company that has your 401(K) about possibly lowering your distributions below the SSI limit.

Best of luck,
