Will my wife receive more money if she switches to a spousal benefit?

Published: January 11, 2024

Full question: My wife started collecting her Social Security at 65, I started at 70. She is asking if she can switch to collecting under my SS benefits now or do something else to increase her monthly benefit. We have been married 42 years.

Hi there,

If the amount of spousal benefit your wife is eligible to receive based on your earnings record is greater than her own retirement benefit, then she may be eligible to receive a spousal increase to bring her total amount up to the spousal amount.

We recommend that you contact your local SSA office to determine if this applies to her.

Best of luck,
Martha
