How do I switch from a spousal benefit to my own?

Published: November 1, 2024

Full question: When I retired in October 2019, I applied for spouse’s benefits at that time which would continue until age 70. I turned 70 on October 29, 2023. How do I make the change from collecting spouse benefit to my own benefit. Thank you for your assistance.

Hi there,

We recommend that you contact your local SSA office as soon as possible.

Inquire if your own retirement benefit is a larger amount than the spousal benefit. If it is, request that they switch you over to your own retirement benefit.

You should also ask if you are eligible for a retroactive amount of the increase for up to 6 months since the switch could have been made at age 70.

All the best,
Martha
