Does my husband need to be at FRA in order for me to switch to spousal benefits?

Published: March 14, 2024

Full question: I am 63 and am wanting to collect my benefits. Can I switch to my husband’s benefits when he retires? Do he have to be at FRA for me to do this?

Hi there,

When you file, you will be required to be filing for both benefits you are eligible for at the same time. You cannot switch from one benefit type to the other.

However, if your husband has not yet filed for benefits (and you are therefore not yet eligible for spousal benefits), you may file for your retirement benefits early, so at a reduced rate. Then when he files for benefits, if you are eligible, your spousal benefit will begin.

All the best,
