Can I apply for spousal benefits once my husband’s SSDI converts to Social Security retirement benefits at his FRA?

Published: June 11, 2025

Full question: I have a question regarding drawing on spousal benefits. Here is our scenario: My husband became eligible and started drawing on SSDI at age 61 in December 2021. He will reach FRA age in Sept 2027. (DOB Sept 1960). This is when his SSDI will convert over to SS retirement benefits. As a spouse, I started drawing on my own Social Security retirement benefits early at age 62.5 months in December 2021. I will reach my FRA at 66 & 10 Months in April 2026 (DOB June 1959). My question is, when my husband’s SSDI converts over to SS retirement benefits when he turns 67 in September of 2027. Can I apply for spousal benefits as I will have already reached my FRA of 66 & 10 months in April of 2026? His benefits reduced by 50% will be greater than what I currently draw from my own SS retirement benefits. I have read mixed answers stating that this option has been taken away. I’m wondering since my husband is drawing on SSDI that it might be different when he converts over to SS retirement benefits in Sept 2027. Any assistance you can provide me with would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

Hi there,

Yes, you can apply for spousal benefits once your husband’s SSDI converts to Social Security retirement benefits at his FRA. Since you will have already reached your FRA by that time, you would be eligible to receive the higher benefit amount based on his record if it is greater than your own retirement benefit.

Please note that because you started drawing your own retirement benefits early, the amount you receive is permanently reduced. However, this does not affect your eligibility for spousal benefits once your husband transitions to retirement benefits.
