Can I pay Medicare on a monthly basis?

Published: April 26, 2024

Full question: My social security only covers small part of medicare payment. Medicare does NOT allow me to pay the rest monthly but charges me one huge sum once a year. WHY?

Hi there,

It sounds like your full monthly Medicare premiums are higher than you Social Security benefit.

If this is due to your income related monthly adjustment amount, IRMAA, the amount can change with each year. If it is an ongoing higher amount, you might be able to arrange with your plan provider for the premiums to be automatically withdrawn from your checking or saving bank account on a regular basis.

We encourage you to contact your local SSA office to get a payment plan set up.

Warm regards,
Martha
