What are the current earnings test threshold limits?

Published: March 11, 2025

Full question: Is it true that if I collect my husband’s survivor benefits at 60 I can only make $23,500 a year in my income or I have to pay $2.00 for every dollar over that amount?

Hi there,

If you claim the survivor benefits before your FRA, the SSA will withhold a certain amount of your monthly Social Security checks depending on how much you earn over the threshold limits.

The current earnings test threshold limits for 2025 are $23,400/year ($1 withheld for every $2 in earnings above limit) for the years up to your year of FRA, and $62,160/year ($1 withheld for every $3 in earnings above limit) for the months in that year prior to the month of FRA.
