I am turning 63 in August and I am applying in May to start receiving benefits in September. Will I get the amount for age 63?

Full question: I am turning 63 in August of this year. I am applying now in May to start receiving benefits in September. I want to get the amount for age 63. Will that work?

Hi there,

Your benefit check is based on the month that you select to “start benefits” on your application and the first check is received the month after that.

If you choose to start benefits in September, the month after you turn 63, your benefit would be slightly higher than the month before. Your first check would arrive in October.

You can verify with the Social Security Administration when they send you their application decision letter of entitlement to benefits to ensure you are getting the amount you expected.

Take care,
Martha
