Can my wife apply for Social Security at age 62?

Published: June 11, 2025

Full question: My wife is 57. If she applies for Social Security at age 62 will she get the higher of her SS benefits or 50% of mine (age 68). Also the 3:1 restriction before FRA – that amount will be added at FRA – so a person does not lose it – but it is paid at FRA – Thanks.

Hi there,

When your wife applies for Social Security benefits at age 62, she will be eligible for the higher of her own retirement benefits or spousal benefits based on your record. However, both benefits will be reduced because she is applying before her full retirement age (FRA). The reductions when taken at age 62 will be 30% for retirement benefits and 35% for spousal benefits

Regarding the “3:1 restriction, ” I am assuming you are referring to the earnings test that applies when collecting and still working prior to FRA. At her FRA, her benefit amount will be recalculated to a higher amount due to the total amount withheld.
