Will my daughter’s benefit increase if my wife suspends her payments?

Published: November 22, 2024

Full question: My wife receives a spouse with child-in-care payment based on my work record. Currently both her and my child’s payments are reduced due to the family maximum. My wife is going back to work and will suspend her payments because her income will far exceed the max allowed. Will Social Security restore my daughters benefit to 1/2 of my PIA since we will no longer be over the family maximum?

Hi there,

Yes, the SSA should do that. We recommend that you contact your local SSA office to make sure they know your wife’s work plan and confirm the month that your daughter’s child benefit will increase to 50% of your PIA.

Best of luck,
Martha
