Full question: Hi Martha, I applied for SSI a month ago but then decided that I wanted to cancel the process so I went to the Social Security office and the person that spoke to me told me that he couldn’t do it, that I needed a telephone appointment to do that. I have read now that canceling a benefits application only requires submitting a form. Do you know why that telephone call could be necessary? Thank you

If you are within 12 months of your initial application and you would like to withdraw, you can submit the withdrawal form found here. You may either mail or fax the form or make an appointment to make sure everything is submitted properly.
