Can I have a Medicare Supplement plan and Medicare Advantage?
Published: April 15, 2025Full question: If I’m own Medicare Advantage and turned 65, I purchased a Medicare Supp during my birthday window, but would also like to continue on my current Med Advantage plan for now. Can I keep the Supplement as a back up plan since I haven’t enrolled in Medicare Part D which is what unenrolls me from Med Advantage?
Hi there,
Medicare Advantage (MA) and Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans are incompatible. If you are enrolled in an MA plan, Medigap will not pay for any of your costs because Medigap is designed to work with Original Medicare (Part A & Part B), not MA plans.
You usually have to choose one: If you purchased a Medigap plan during your birthday window but decide to stay with your Medicare Advantage plan, you should cancel the Medigap policy since it won’t provide any benefits while you’re on an MA plan.
Best regards,
Martha
