Are there benefits specifically for caregivers?

Published: December 12, 2024

Full question: My girlfriend and I have lived together for about 13 years. She has within the last month and a half been diagnosed with cancer and she is unable to take care of herself. Hospice comes in 2 or 3 times a week to bath and examine her. I take care of her every day. I feed, give her drinks(water and Pepsi). She wears depends which I change as needed. Is this a qualifying situation for caregiver benefits? We are both on social security.

Hi there,

Social Security doesn’t have caregiver benefits other than child-in-care benefits. If she is on Medicaid, they might pay Medicaid waiver (difficulty of care) payments for caregivers. If you think that you may be eligible, contact your state Medicaid agency.

Warmly,
Martha
