I collect ex-spousal benefits now. Will that benefit increase when my ex begins collecting?

Published: August 22, 2023

Full question: I am receiving SS from a former spouse. I took it at 65, my FRA is 66 and 6mo. Spouse is 2 years younger. I heard I might receive a bump when spouse actually takes SS. This doesn’t seem correct to me but thought I’d ask.

Hi there,

No, unfortunately your benefit amount remains the same, with COLAs, once you start collecting them regardless of when your ex-spouse collects.

If your former spouse passes away, you may then be eligible for a bump up to a higher survivor benefit amount.
