How many Social Security checks will be withheld?
Published: October 23, 2024Full question: I want to work and collect Social Security. My FRA is August 2026. I need to make $700 per month over the $1,860/month limit because I need to cover medical benefits for my husband and myself. That equals $350/month penalty. How many security checks will be withheld to offset the penalty?
Hi there,
The number of Social Security checks withheld each year will depend on the amount of your Social Security benefit, the amount you earn, and the earnings test thresholds for those years.
The current annual earnings test threshold limits for 2024 are $22,320 for the years up to your year of FRA, and $59,520 for the year of FRA. These can be calculated as monthly amounts if needed.
Once you reach the month of your FRA, the earnings test will no longer apply and SSA will recalculate and increase your benefit to account for the funds that were withheld during those years.
