Can I get my Social Security taxes back if I will never be eligible for benefits?

Published: September 26, 2024

Full question: I have contributed Social security taxes for only 5 years and I am not eligible for spousal or survivor benefits. I will be receiving a teachers pension in the future. Can I get my SS taxes back for the 5 years, since I will never be eligible for the SS retirement benefits?

Hi there,

No, I do not know of a way you can do that.

However, if you work in the future and earn enough to accumulate 4 credits per year, you would then be eligible for Social Security benefits after 5 years. The WEP and GPO pension reduction rules would likely apply though when you are collecting both Social Security and the teacher’s pension.
