On Thursday May 14, 2020 the Social Security Administration released new information regarding Economic Impact Payments (Stimulus Checks). This information affects specific groups of Social Security and SSI (Supplemental Security Income) beneficiaries.

The SSA stated, “Beneficiaries who have their regular monthly payments managed for them by another person, called a representative payee, will begin receiving their EIPs [Economic Impact Payments] from the IRS in late May.”

If you have a representative payee, how you receive your Stimulus Check is determined by whether or not you filed 2018 or 2019 taxes. If you did file a 2018 or 2019 tax return, your Stimulus Check will be sent to the bank account on your tax return or it will be mailed to the address on your tax return. If you did not file a 2018 or 2019 tax return, your representative payee should expect to receive your Stimulus Check in late May to the same direct deposit account or Direct Express card as the recipient’s monthly payment. The IRS will provide an update when paper checks will be mailed to representative payees.

Additionally, other Stimulus Check information affects beneficiaries who live in U.S. territories including American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Rather than the IRS, the tax authority of each territory will pay Stimulus Checks to eligible beneficiaries. It is expected that beneficiaries in these territories will begin receiving payments by early June.

Andrew Saul, the Commissioner of Social Security, stated that millions of Social Security and SSI beneficiaries have already received their Stimulus Checks and the IRS and SSA are working hard to ensure all eligible beneficiaries receive their checks.
