National Consumer Protection Week (March 1–7, 2026) highlights the importance of protecting consumers from fraud, identity theft, and financial exploitation.
The Federal Trade Commission describes the week as a time to focus on “frauds, scams, and consumer rights” and to encourage conversations about prevention, reporting, and recovery.
Throughout the week, the FTC is hosting educational webinars, community discussions, and in-person events designed to help individuals better understand today’s most common scam tactics.
The FTC encourages consumers to take practical steps, including:
If you receive an unexpected call or text asking for money or personal information:
Pause. It may be a scam. Speak with someone you trust before taking action.
If you encounter a scam:
Report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov to notify authorities and receive guidance on next steps.
If you sent money to a scammer:
Contact the payment company immediately, explain that the transaction was fraudulent, and ask whether recovery is possible. Additional recovery guidance is available at ftc.gov/scammed.
If you shared personal information:
Visit IdentityTheft.gov to learn what protective steps to take.
As part of National Consumer Protection Week, the Inspector General for the Social Security Administration has designated March 5, 2026, as National “Slam the Scam” Day. This campaign raises awareness about Social Security and other government imposter scams. We’ll be sharing additional resources on March 5 to help you stay informed and protected.
Scams continue to evolve, but awareness remains one of the strongest defenses.
At NARSSA, we believe informed decisions are stronger decisions. Consumer protection is not limited to one week. It is an ongoing commitment to education, vigilance, and sharing trusted information within our communities.
