When should I begin collecting my Social Security benefits?

Published: September 28, 2023

Full question: Hello, I was told by an RSSA expert to begin my benefits in Jan. 2024 to avoid being penalized, and possibly losing out on, benefits. I work part-time but my monthly earnings are roughly $3k and the ceiling is around $1770. Should I begin benefits in Jan. 2024 where the first check would be paid in Feb. 2024?

Hi there,

That depends on if you are still working and are younger than your full retirement age, FRA, in 2024. The earnings test will still apply if you are younger than FRA.

If 2024 is the year you turn FRA, then the earning thresholds are much higher and there is no earnings test in and after the month you turn FRA.
