Can I file for ex-spousal benefits and switch to my own benefit later?

Published: August 7, 2025

Full question: May I file for a Social Security benefit against my ex’s record and delay my own benefit filing until age 70? I am single, age 65 and my ex is also 65.

Hello,

Unfortunately, no. You cannot file for ex-spousal benefits and delay filing for your own retirement benefits until age 70. The “filing as a spouse first” option is only available to individuals who were born before January 2, 1954. Since you are 65, you would be subject to “deemed filing,” which means when you file for one benefit, you are effectively filing for all eligible benefits. You will receive the higher of the two amounts at the time you file.

To discuss your specific situation and explore your options, it’s best to contact the Social Security Administration directly or consult with a Registered Social Security Analyst (RSSA). You can find an RSSA near you here.

Take care,
Martha
