Can I cancel my Social Security application?

Published: January 27, 2026

Full question: I had retired in May 2025, received my 1st check in July, but I realized I would like to try to work 1 more year. What do I do and is there a penalty?

Hi there,

To cancel a Social Security application, you must submit Form SSA-521, Request for Withdrawal of Application, generally within 12 months of approval. You must repay any benefits received, including Medicare costs, and you can only do this once. This allows you to file a new application at any time.

Best of luck,
Martha
