Will I receive my benefit or my ex-spousal benefit?

Published: September 12, 2024

Full question: I was married to my ex husband for 11 years and divorced in 2003, I’m now 74 and collected my Social Security at age 64 due to cancer but don’t know if my ex had started collecting Social Security and still working part time and he’s now 72. How do I know if his Social Security is higher that I would qualify 50% of his income because I get $3,079 monthly .

Hi there,

If you are receiving that amount ($3,079), it would not be possible for his benefit to be large enough so that 50% of his PIA would be higher than what you are receiving. You can only collect the higher of the two benefits.
