RSSA® for Kaplan

Social Security: The Cornerstone of Retirement Planning

Every company is committed to helping clients achieve financial wellness, protect assets, and plan for the future. But one of the most critical components of retirement is often overlooked: Social Security.

  • 1 in 3 retirees rely on Social Security as their only income.
  • On average, families leave over $139,000 unclaimed in lifetime benefits.
  • Millions of Americans don’t know when or how to file, and the Social Security Administration is legally not allowed to give advice.

As a Registered Social Security Analyst® (RSSA®), you fill this gap. You’ll provide clients with clarity, strategies, and confidence for their most important retirement decision — when and how to claim Social Security. Beyond the immediate benefit optimization, Social Security opens the door to deeper client conversations around taxes, Medicare, retirement income, and wealth protection — positioning you as a trusted advisor at the very center of their financial future.

How to Earn the RSSA® Credential

    1. Enroll in the RSSA® Program

Begin by enrolling in the RSSA® Certificate Program, the required education pathway for earning the Registered Social Security Analyst® (RSSA®) credential.

Enrollment provides access to the RSSA platform, which includes the full five-module certificate curriculum, assessments, candidate support, and access to RSSA Roadmap®, the Social Security planning and optimization software used throughout the program and in the final exam.

The RSSA Program is administered by the National Association of Registered Social Security Analysts (NARSSA), which governs education standards, testing, credentialing, and ongoing professional requirements.

    2. Complete the Certificate Coursework

The RSSA® Certificate Program consists of five self-paced online modules designed to build comprehensive, applied Social Security expertise.

The program requires approximately 20–25 hours of total study time and may be completed fully online at the learner’s own pace. Each module concludes with a 40-question multiple-choice assessment, and a minimum passing score of 75% is required. All five modules must be successfully completed before a candidate becomes eligible to sit for the RSSA® Competency Final Exam.

    3. Pass the RSSA® Competency Final Exam

he RSSA® Competency Final Exam validates a candidate’s ability to apply Social Security knowledge in real-world planning scenarios. The exam is delivered online, is live-proctored, and has a total duration of four hours.

It is administered through NARSSA’s secure platform and offered on a recurring schedule. The exam includes a knowledge-based multiple-choice section and a case-based section that evaluates Social Security claiming strategies and benefit optimization, including the use of RSSA Roadmap® software.

    4. Maintain the RSSA® Credential

To keep the RSSA® credential in good standing, credential holders must maintain active membership with the National Association of Registered Social Security Analysts (NARSSA).

Ongoing requirements include annual continuing education, annual membership renewal, continued adherence to the RSSA® Professional Code of Conduct, and proper use of the RSSA® credential and trademarks. This governance structure ensures the RSSA® credential remains current, credible, and aligned with evolving Social Security rules and professional standards.

The RSSA® Education Program: 5 Modules

The RSSA® Education Program is structured as a progressive learning experience that builds from core concepts to advanced application, giving learners the knowledge, context, and hands-on practice needed to confidently guide clients through important Social Security decisions.

Module I: Foundations of Social Security

Build a strong foundation in how Social Security works, how benefits are calculated, and why claiming decisions matter. This module covers the history of the program, benefit types, full retirement age, and the long-term outlook of Social Security—giving you the confidence to explain the system clearly and accurately.

Module II: Mastery of Advanced Topics

Go deeper into the most complex and high-impact Social Security rules. Learn how spousal, divorced, survivor, family, and disability benefits work, along with critical claiming considerations such as life expectancy, earnings limits, and overpayments. This module is essential for handling real-world client scenarios.

Module III: Bridging Benefits Across Related Programs

Understand how Social Security interacts with taxes, pensions, Medicare, and broader retirement income planning. This module covers taxation of benefits, WEP and GPO, Medicare eligibility and costs, and how all retirement income sources work together—helping you see the full financial picture.

Module IV: Expert Practice & Client Communication

Learn how to apply Social Security expertise in practice. This module focuses on working with clients, assessing needs, presenting analyses clearly, and integrating Social Security planning into a professional practice. It also introduces strategies for self-employed business owners and retirement professionals.

Module V: Social Security Software Case Studies

Apply everything you’ve learned using real-world case studies inside the RSSA Roadmap® software. Work through detailed scenarios—married, single, divorced, widowed, families with children, and households with disabled adult children—learning how to analyze, optimize, and clearly communicate recommendations.
